
A Precise Relocation for the Heavy Buffer
Stop paying the structured clone tax by using the new native transfer method to move memory between threads without copying.
If you’ve ever watched your main thread gasp for air while sending a 100MB buffer to a Web Worker, you’ve felt the "structured clone tax." For years, moving data in JavaScript has felt less like handing someone a folder and more like photocoping every single page before throwing the original in the shredder.
It’s slow, it’s memory-intensive, and it’s finally becoming optional. With the arrival of ArrayBuffer.prototype.transfer(), we’re getting a surgical tool for memory management that allows us to move data between contexts without the overhead of a full copy.
The Cost of Being Safe
By default, when you send data to a Worker via postMessage, JavaScript uses the Structured Clone Algorithm. It’s a remarkably robust piece of engineering that can handle circular references, Dates, RegExps, and Maps. But for "heavy" buffers—think video frames, WASM memory, or massive datasets—structured cloning is a performance killer.
It creates a full duplicate of the data in the target thread’s memory. If you have a 500MB buffer, you briefly need 1GB of RAM to complete the transfer. On a mobile device, that’s an invitation for the OS to kill your process.
The "Old" Way: Transferables
We’ve had "Transferable Objects" for a while. You could pass an array of buffers as the second argument to postMessage, and the engine would move the memory instead of copying it.

You have to explicitly track which buffers are being transferred in a separate array, and it only works across the postMessage bridge. If you wanted to "move" memory within the same thread (for example, to resize a buffer or change its ownership), you were out of luck.
Enter ArrayBuffer.prototype.transfer()
The new transfer() method (and its sibling transferToFixedLength()) changes the game. It allows you to take an existing buffer and "move" its underlying memory into a new buffer object.
The most important part? The original buffer becomes detached. Its length drops to zero, and it can no longer be accessed. This is the "Precise Relocation" I'm talking about.
Example: Resizing without the Rubbish
Usually, if you wanted to expand a buffer, you’d have to create a new one and copy the data over manually. transfer() handles this natively and much more efficiently.

Where this really shines is when you want to prepare data for a worker or handle a worker's response without leaving "ghost" memory behind. I’ve found this particularly useful when dealing with binary streams where the size isn't known upfront.
Instead of guessing the size and wasting RAM, you can start small and transfer() to a larger buffer as data pours in. When you’re done, you send it off.

The biggest hurdle for developers moving from a "copy everything" mindset to a "transfer" mindset is the detached state. Once you call .transfer(), the original object is effectively a zombie.
If you try to access a detached buffer, JavaScript will throw a TypeError. This is actually a good thing—it prevents the kind of "use-after-free" bugs that haunt C++ developers—but it does require you to be more deliberate about your data's lifecycle.

As of late 2023 and early 2024, ArrayBuffer.prototype.transfer has landed in all major evergreen browsers (Chrome 114+, Firefox 122+, Safari 17.4+). It’s officially part of the ES2024 spec.
If you’re working in Node.js, you’ve got access to this in version 20.x and 22.x. It’s ready for prime time.
Final Thoughts
We spend a lot of time optimizing our JavaScript bundles to save a few kilobytes of transfer over the wire, yet we often ignore the hundreds of megabytes we're shuffling around in RAM.
By using .transfer(), you’re telling the engine exactly what you intend to do: "I am done with this memory here; I want it over *there*." It’s cleaner code, it’s lighter on the garbage collector, and your users' device batteries will thank you for not making the CPU do unnecessary manual labor.
